Happy Mother’s Day, Moms! I hope you enjoyed the gift your child worked hard on at school for you!
Announcements - 1st grade Track and Field Day has been rescheduled for Wednesday, May 16th. Be sure to dress your child in comfortable clothing and gyms shoes. Sunscreen should be applied in the morning before coming to school and please be sure to put your child’s name on their water bottle if you choose to send one along.
Enrichment Day will be held on Friday, May 25th. This year’s theme, Healthy Mind and Healthy Bodies, will include a school walk, Zumba lessons, and a Brain Show! It is sure to be a great day! We are looking for guest readers to come in and share a book with our class in the afternoon. If you are interested and available, please let me know!
Poetry Celebration - To conclude our study of poetry, we are having a Poetry Celebration at 2:00 on Wednesday, the 30th. Any parent or sibling who is available is welcome to come and hear our talented poets as they each share one of their favorite poems with the class. The students are working hard to complete their poetry anthologies which they will bring home after the Poetry Celebration.
4th Quarter Assessments It is that time again! Your children will be busy showing what they know over the next 2 weeks. Please make sure you are practicing sight words and spelling words with your child at home. The final spelling test covering all 100 first grade words will be Wednesday, May 23rd.
Phonics We are discussing the prefixes un and re this week. The students will be learning why & when each prefix is used and will choose the appropriate prefix to complete a word in a sentence.
Math We are continuing to review 1st grade concepts as we work through Unit 10. I will be sending some supplemental math homework focusing on secure and developing skills for this quarter.
Science We are wrapping up our insect study this week and will be saying farewell to our darkling beetles. The students will be building a darkling beetle and labeling the 3 body parts that they have learned about. They will also draw and label the 4 stages in a mealworm’s life cycle. Look for the insect observations they have done over the past 6 weeks to come home in the binder.
